Demelza provides specialist care and emotional support for seriously and terminally ill children and their loved ones, so they can enjoy their time together as a family, for as long as they have. We support families across Kent, South East London and East Sussex.

Are you an experienced ambitious leader looking for a new challenge? We seek an individual with an impressive track record within the not-for-profit sector to head up our Community and Events team.

You will have previous experience of working at a senior level within the Charity sector with significant knowledge of strategic planning, budgeting and creating innovative events, mass participation products and campaigns.

You will have a wide range of relationship management skills which will demonstrate your excellent ability to communicate with a wide range of groups, and your previous management experience will enable you to effectively motivate, lead and develop your team.

Ability to drive and access to a vehicle is essential as regular travel will be required. This role will involve regular evening and weekend working.

This role will be mainly based at our Sittingbourne hospice however it may be possible for some time to be spent at our Eltham hospice or at home.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE – Head of Community and Fundraising

REPORTS TO – Director of Fundraising & Marketing

RESPONSIBLE FOR – Events Team and Community Fundraising Team

PURPOSE OF ROLE

To deliver income on or above target through a portfolio of successful community and events activities and making best use of all resources.

To provide leadership and strategic direction for the Community and Events Fundraising function across the Demelza organisation, including maximising the networks of the Area Fundraising programme.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Business Planning

  • Devise, lead and implement an organisation wide Community and Events fundraising strategy, in line with Demelza’s overall strategy.

  • Review and develop through improvement and innovation, Demelza's community and events fundraising activity to ensure it meets the needs of supporters, fundraising groups and donors

  • Promote and enable a positive culture of engagement that values the work of Demelza's donors and supporters funding research, services and support for those families using Demelza's services

  • Act as project manager or project board member providing strategic advice, management or contribution to relevant programmes and projects

  • To ensure innovation sits at the heart of the community and events strategy

  • Seek continuous improvements to the quality and output of the fundraising teams and fundraising groups taking account of strategic decisions, the requirements of our donors, legislative changes and best practice

  • Propose and be accountable for the efficient management of income and expenditure, including effective budget preparation, planning, monitoring and review

  • Ensure effective financial and resource management with appropriate objectives, measurements and review

  • Ensure appropriate risk and contingency management for income generation considering gross income, net income, ROI and life time value

  • Report on income generation, variances, forecasts and other KPI’s

  • Ensure the impact of the department’s work is measured in financial terms as return on investment and life time values, and in other ways in accordance Demelza's policies/procedures/outcome measurement strategy

Community Fundraising

  • Manage the Community Fundraising team to deliver the strategy, individual business plans and budget.

  • Review and advise on the fundraising within our regions to assist in the development of their collective income generation including analysis and insight, learning, best practice and compliance regulation

  • Review and lead the development of our area fundraising programme to ensure it delivers maximum short and long term benefit against our strategic objectives

  • Develop quality standards taking account of best practice and the organisation’s quality standards and ensure these standards are met

  • Lead the inspiration and delivery of local fundraising through our area fundraising programme across Kent, East Sussex and South East London

  • Ensure there is community fundraising content for all those staff and volunteers involved in community and events fundraising activities that reflect donor, organisational and legal requirements, and which specifies mandatory and ongoing training

Events Fundraising

  • anage the Events team to deliver the strategy, individual business plans and budget.

  • Together with the Events Manager and team, devise the annual events calendar for Demelza.

  • Ensure our events calendar delivers on the 4 pillars; income, brand engagement, donor acquisition and family engagement.

  • Ensure there is community fundraising content for all those staff and volunteers involved in community and events fundraising activities that reflect donor, organisational and legal requirements, and which specifies mandatory and ongoing training

  • Develop a calendar that includes a mixture of Challenge Events, Mass Participation Events and third party events.

  • Stakeholder Management – work with the team to create stakeholder communications plans for all events that reflects our case for support, tone of voice and brand. Work closely with Marketing & Communications to develop the tools needed to create this engagement plan.

Leadership and Teamwork

  • Create a collaborative and motivated team of Community and Events fundraisers

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across the department and whole organisation

  • Accountable for the effective day to day management and delivery of functions and activities within the department

  • Work closely with Managers to ensure consistency of advice, guidance and support provided to staff, volunteers and donors on issues of community fundraising, events fundraising and working with fundraising groups

  • Be the leading authority in community and events fundraising, providing advice on policy and strategy, including providing advice to the Director of Fundraising and Marketing on community or events fundraising matters including new ways of giving, donor motivation, retention and attrition

  • Ensure appropriate leadership, recruitment, retention, development and appraisal of staff in accordance with the standards set out in the policies and procedures

  • Ensure that fundraising is understood and respected within Demelza

Marketing & Communications

  • Work closely with Marketing and Communications (especially Comms, Digital and Supporter Relations) to explore different engagement options that would maximise engagement in our events.

  • Using market research and supporter feedback to drive improvement and innovation in the strategy for community and events fundraising

  • Working closely with the Senior Supporter Relations Manager, ensure that Demelza's network is properly supported and that our community and events fundraising activities meet the needs our supporters

  • Work collaboratively with the Marketing team to ensure that social media planning is done in advance and of sufficient quality that befits the SM strategy.

  • Work with the Digital Marketing Manager to develop marketing plans for individual events and make best use of the Events budget for maximum impact with the use of Facebook ads, Google ads grant etc.

Other

  • Promote diversity and inclusion through a range of giving opportunities

  • Ensure guidance and support is available through the Supporter Engagement team for informal fundraising groups especially with respect to community fundraising and events fundraising

  • Represent the Fundraising Department on the H&S Committee.

  • Manage and respond to complaints in line with Demelza's policies and procedures and reviewing practice

  • Undertake speaking engagements and be a spokesperson for Demelza on fundraising from individual donors internally and externally where appropriate

  • Ensure compliance with Demelza's policies on working with Data Protection, Brand, Health & Safety and Equality & Diversity

  • Ensure compliance with Demelza's guidelines on the requirements of event management

  • Ensure understanding and compliance with the protocols for in aid of or on behalf of fundraising activities

  • Responsible for developing a risk register for the function, ensuring audit and evaluation of the function

  • Ensure all legal and regulatory requirements are met

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

Qualifications: 

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) or

  • A relevant, recognised professional qualification or

  • Relevant professional experience, which demonstrates equivalent academic skills

  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Experience:

  • Significant experience of successfully leading a Fundraising team to meet or exceed financial targets or which has successfully delivered on income targets

  • Proven experience of developing programmes of Community and Events fundraising activity and 3 year business plans to recruit, engage, inspire and retain donors

  • Proven planning, programme and project management experience to control effective use of resources

  • Proven experience of delivering a community or event fundraising programme across a wide portfolio of activities, working with local groups and volunteers

  • Experience of working on Mass Participation Events.

  • A proven track record of success in leading and managing a team of comparable size and complexity, to deliver high quality results to deadlines

  • Experience of working in a senior team to develop, communicate and implement business plan

  • Demonstrable experience of applying effective problem solving techniques when the situation demands

  • Demonstrable experience of data insight, testing and financial forecasting

  • Significant experience of financial and budgetary management

  • Demonstrable evidence of up-to-date knowledge of best practice and new initiatives concerning fundraising from community activities and events

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the motivations and needs of fundraisers when taking part in events or community activities

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the cross over between engagement and fundraising and the motivations for both

  • Detailed knowledge of the regulatory environment for fundraising from individuals including data protection, Gift Aid, Health & Safety and Fundraising Code of Practice Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in a wide range of media and audiences
